Shoretrooper™ Muddy Mess

Shoretrooper™ Muddy Mess

Author: Denuo Novo Design Studio

Let’s play a game! Go to the Denuo Novo site, click on the Shoretrooper helmet and try identifying what the base color is. Hint : this is a trick question. If we did our job, you shouldn’t see the base color we used! Don’t worry, you’re not alone! We’ve made this literal mistake where even our floor managers, more often than they’d like to admit, have questioned whether the freshly painted helmets were painted with the right color. That’s how wildly different the base paint is from the weathered final product we are all used to seeing inspired by the Shoretroopers debut in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story™.

This method of weathering on our replica is what we loosely but affectionately term the “the nasty wash”. It’s an exciting process because the helmet starts out pristine in bright tan, then we drench it in a slurry of dark brown, bubbly nastiness (and it smells bad too) that we imagine is more appropriate at the bottom of a Scarif™ ocean inlet than adorned on a valuable collectible! But, the fun part comes when we “peel” the nasty sludge with a series of sponges and brushes. This process ends up taking off as much as 98% of the sludge leaving the desired effect and deco in the crevices and base of the helmet. Altogether, this method tells the story of the Shoretrooper, who’s station in tropical climate regions yields potentially muddy conditions that ultimately wears on their helmet and armor.

While we didn’t invent this fun technique, we did take inspiration from the weathering technique used throughout the original trilogy Star Wars™ films – a method used on everything from buildings to star fighters and Rebel Alliance pilot helmets.  Just like our once bright helmet replica, a “clean” mold color drenched in darker washes brings out that stained, worn look we all know and love.

All together this helmet is a lot of fun to weather, mostly because its everything our parents told us not to do. Believe it or not, it not just random patterns of weathering either – but that’s for a different blog. In the meantime, we hope you enjoy taking a look at these helmets which are coming back in stock shortly as our first batch sold out very quickly. Be sure to sign up for emails to be the first to know when they are live on the site again.

Perhaps, someday we will release a clean version of the Shoretrooper helmet, but that’s really up to you! Let us know if you’d like to see a “freshly issued” Shoretrooper helmet replica from Denuo Novo!
